Egg laying while roosting

Are you saying she has never laid in a nest in this coop or has never laid in one of your nests at all, even in the old coop? Has she just started laying at night? Does she have a regular laying pattern, like mostly every day or every other day?

Different triggers tell a hen when to release a yolk to start the egg making process so the egg should be laid during daylight hours. Each hen can be a little different so you can get some variations.

An important one is daylight. How dark is the coop at night? Can she somehow be triggered because of a security light or street light? If she has just started this I think it has to be something with the new coop.

I can't come up with anything else. You may have to choose with things as they are or getting rid of her.

She’s laid in the nests in the old coop(which was significantly smaller).
In the old coop I rarely got an egg before letting them out. Typically all my hens lay around 9am-1pm. For the coop it’s pitch black no possible way for light to get in until I turn on the light or open the door

I’m having one hen laying while roosting at night everyday for the past 3 weeks. Roost is 28inches off the ground and the nesting box is across the coop (6ish feet away) I lock them up everyday 45min after dark and there isn’t any eggs on the floor, but when I let them out in the morning (6:30) there’s an egg on the ground. They roost close together so it’s a little challenging figuring out which one is doing it. Any suggestions on getting her to either lay in the box in the morning would be appreciated
I've have that happen too every once in a while. My roost is a bit higher and the floor of the coop is sand. AND, the nesting boxes are about 4-6 feet away. The egg is usually broken and pretty much eaten by the time I get out there to find it.

No poop trays under the roosts? Poop trays about 6" below the roosts, with ½" of sand in them, would at least keep the eggs from breaking, although they won't change the hen's behavior.
