Egg membrane seemingly not attached to egg shell

So, I have been getting some cracked eggs occasionally, every now and then, I can see that the membrane inside of the shell is not punctured. Only the egg shell is cracked. Mind you, these are fresh out of the hen house. They haven't been cooked. So, for one of the eggs, I wanted to see how much of the egg shell I could take off before the membrane punctured and I almost got half way. No shell. Just membrane. Like, everything about the egg is intact. Like, a hard boiled egg without the shell, except it's not boiled. It's raw. What is this!? They get layer feed, free range, free access to oyster shells, and kitchen scraps.
