One of my chickens laid this egg today. What would cause this and could there be a problem with the chicken?

Two potential causes come to mind. I'll link to the Egg Quality Guide to show a body checked egg. From your photo I don't think that is it but if you crack it and it only has one yolk this is a possibility.

I think what happened is that your chicken accidentally released two yolks on the same day. They started to form two separate eggs but grew together in the shell gland while she was depositing the shell material. If it has two yolks when you crack it this is probably the cause. It is unusual, often when this happens you get two totally separate eggs instead of them growing together.

These things happen more often when a pullet is just starting laying or when a hen is getting pretty old but they can happen to any hen at any time. If it is a onetime or widely scattered incident I don't worry about it. I figure we are all entitled to an occasional oops as long as we don't make a habit of it. If it is a pullet just starting to lay it may take a few days to get the kinks out of her internal egg-making factory, that is a fairly complicated process. If it becomes habit-forming then there is something wrong with that hen or pullet. Consider it a birth defect.

Good luck but I advise patience.
