Last night about 7:30 pm, I went to check on my chickens. They are about 26 weeks now. I found a egg yolk and white on the floor of the coop. It looks just a perfect sunny side up egg. First I thought one of egg got laid on the floor and they ate the shells. But I found there is not any pieces of shells around. Then I saw a white stuff hanging out one of Golden Laces Wyandotte's rear end. They are all on the perch already. I saw the white stuff when she stands up on the perch. I thought it was her intestines. I was really panicking. I thought she got hurt or something seriously happened. Then she walked down the perch, I saw the white stuff dropped on the floor. I watched them for 10 minutes and scooped out the egg from the floor. She seems fine and normal. I checked them again in the morning. She seems fine. I have only found one egg before on the coop floor beside this time. Is something wrong with her? Do I need to do something for her?

Hi. Has she laid eggs before? Do you provide calcium in the form of oyster shell in a dish where the hens can help themselves to as much as they want? What do you feed, including treats? It sounds like she laid a shell-less egg.

Hi Blue, I do have oyster shells in a dish near by their feed. I saw the other hen eat them before, so I think she will know it is there if needed. The feed is Purnia Organic Laying Pullet and Purnia Flock raiser mixed together. I give them some mealworms, carrots, scratch corn treat. This is first time I saw a shell-less egg. :(

I dropped an egg on the ground once and before I could do anything, a hen ran and grabbed the whole shell and gobbled it up in seconds. I covered the yolk and white up with dirt to keep the other chicks from getting it... I don't want them to get any bright ideas. Know what I mean? No issues since. So maybe it was just an accident and a hungry chick got the shell. Just keep an eye out. Probably not an issue.

When my girls started laying, I found a membrane-only egg on the floor of the coop, and a shellless egg on the poop mat, yolk intact. So if they're just starting out, it can take a bit for all the kinks to get worked out of the system.

Hi Sally, yes, she just started laying about 2 weeks ago. I will keep eye on them. Thank you.

Just a softshell egg....not uncommon for a new layer.
Are they eating the OS?
Might sprinkle some around with the other treats, but keep those treats to a minimum.

Hi apart, thanks for the advice.

I have a hen who lays shell-less eggs (in the nest box) randomly. I have calcium supplemented feed and oyster shells (and sometimes feed their shells back to them). I often have calcium deposits on other shells, so they are getting enough. For some reason, Jazzy just lays eggs without shells some times. The other hens don't bother the yolk/white, but it does make for a mess in the nest! This has been happening her entire 3 years of laying. On and off though. It's happened twice the week but hasn't happened for probably two full months before this.
I hope it is only an isolated event for yours though!
