I found one of my chicks this morning with a missing leg — All other chicks and other animals are fine and there’s sign of struggling such as feathers.

The injury itself is very strange; her left leg is completely gone, and there’s almost no blood. The area where the leg once was is just smooth flesh, no deep gashes or anything.

Overall she seems okay, she’s eating and drinking and even hopping around when she has to, but she’s very clearly in pain and possibly a little feverish too. What should I do to make sure she recovers? She’s a very lightweight breed, so she’ll most likely be able to sustain her weight on one leg.

I can provide pictures if needed, although they may be a little graphic.

Here’s an image of her from this morning when I first found her — she’s inside now

I've heard raccoons are bad to reach their paws inside a cage and grab a chicken by its head, legs or wings and yank it off the bird sometimes killing them.I have no idea how large the openings are on your cage but they can squeeze their paw thru 1 or 2" chicken wire .I hope your chicks is okay!

The only mesh that's raccoon proof is 1/4" or 1/2" galvanized steel hw cloth.Rats will eat their toes or wings off too.I would treat her for shock (quiet room low lights no noise)Apply an antibiotic ointment on the injury after cleaning it is about all you can do

I believe it’s a raccoon too, we’ve decided to move our chicks into a cage in the garage at night
