Eye issues, sick chicks need help!

I wouldn't lance it. give it a couple more days then maybe very carefully grab it with tweezers. It's quite possible that the infection has invaded his eyeball. If that's the case, he will probably lose they eye. Don't freak out, just give him a little more time. Can you post more pictures at different angles?

Kathy,

Today I spent a little time massaging the blob and got it moving. I ended up being able to get it out and it was HUGE for his size! It was hard like cheese too. After doing that chick, I was able to get some out of the eye of the Swedish Flower Hen. She is still alive, btw, and doing much better today. She is a real fighter I tell ya!. Here is a pic of the blob I got out of the roo's eye.

Kinda reminds me of Bumblefoot-of the eye. Maybe it's Staph.

This year is the first year I've dealt with some mosquito born stuff. A few of my chickens got pox. And one roo had an infected eye. Not like yours, but swollen shut. I washed and put ointment on it, but in the end , he's still on antibiotics, but it's looking better.

Quick update...the rooster seems to be all well. As soon as I got the junk out of his eye, it cleared up and was completely normal the next day. The Swedish Flower Hen, however, still has the eye issue. She is still alive and actually doing very well, just the eye infection that will not go away.

Now, for the bad news...I alerted the breeder that I got my birds from about my issues and encouraged them to get their birds tested. They did and just got the results back. They found that one of their pens was positive for mycoplasma (MG) and it was the pen some of my birds were in. So, that pretty much diagnoses my birds with mycoplasma as well I would say. That said, I have thought it over long and hard and talked it over with my wife and daughter. We are NOT going to de-populate and start over. I have read a LOT about myco and believe we can deal with it. Sure, it means no birds in or out and our birds will be more likely to get sick. That is fine, I can deal with that. I just can't see killing all of these creatures just because they are most likely carrying something. Oh, and I not some pansy yuppy afraid to kill when needed. I hunt and kill numerous deer each year to put food on the table. Besides, from the research I have done, it is claimed that around 80% of backyard flocks are infected with myco already anyway. I could kill them all and start over, just to have it show up again. Just not willing to do that.

I spoke to the breeder I got my birds from and she has 7 two month old chicks from the infected pen that she has not killed yet. She knows she needs to kill them, she just has not had the heart to do so yet. She said I can have them no cost if I don't plan to just kill them. I may just go rescue them and add them to my flock.

I thought I would update this thread a little. Things have improved significantly here and all issues are gone for the moment! My Swedish Flower Hen that was the sickest and looked the worst is finally better and growing like a weed! I ended up curing her eye issue with ionic silver applied topically to the eye twice a day as well as orally once a day. I saw improvement within 24 hours and within 3 days, I was able to clean out a yellow blob like I did with my Legbar roo. She is now perfectly fine and full of attitude! Here eye that was infected is blind I am just about sure but that does not seem to slow her down any.

We also ended up going to the breeder and taking some of the birds she had that she needed to cull that I mentioned in a post above. Figured we might as well rescue them so she did not have to kill them. We ended up with a Black Andulusian, another Silver Laced Wyandotte, and a Golden Campine. That puts our total at 11 birds!

Here are some before and after pictures of the Swedish Flower Hen:

Thank you all for your help and encouragement. I do appreciate it!
