Feeding chickens hotdogs

Protein is always good. As Omnivores they eat everything.

Friend of mine worked at a organic farm that also raised layers and would butcher flocks after two years. The floor drain outlet was mobbed by chickens eating the scraps washed down on butchering day.

Maybe I'm wrong about this but don't hot dogs have a lot of sodium in them?

I didn't think that was good for them.

Here is a video of my chickens eating hotdogs.

Mine love them too... they only get them very rarely now, with 13 in the flock, and I'll cut them up very small (like nickel-size slices and then quarter those) because I have a couple girls that are super greedy and won't share. LOL When the first 6 were little chicks, I broke up Nudges dog treats into crumbs.. the ones from steak... and they went crazy over them. But they are pretty expensive and they eat them so fast that I don't do that very often anymore... not to mention that my dog doesn't appreciate it when I give away her treats to the chickens. :lau

Agree that the sodium is too high to make this a regular part of their diet, but the occasional leftover hot dog is a protein and fat boost.

My son won’t eat the ends of hot dogs, so they get cut off and tossed in the “chicken bowl”. It’s funny to watch them fight over 4 hot dog ends coming out of a bowl full of veggie scraps.

If it was just salt, I'd be less concerned. These most likely have artificial sodium nitrate and nitrite. Plus probably table salt.

Yes, old thread. Just wanted say: Don't give processed foods to poultry.
