1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I grew up in Northern Cal and have always been around and loved chickens. However, my adolescent experiences were mostly around our Boy Scout troops fund raising each year where we culled, gutted, and plucked chickens for local farmers. As a principal at a school in Southern Cal, I started a hands on project based curriculum with a garden to table program and teaching kitchen and we had a chicken coop where kids learned about caring for them humanely and efficiently, egg production, etc. And finally, now retired I have 10 chicks in my bathroom growing steadily until they move into the coop.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have ten chicks that are about 2 weeks old.

(3) What breeds do you have?
we have 3 black sex links, 4 Speckled Sussex, and 3 sapphire gems

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Now quite there as ours are only 2 weeks old, but I love to hear them chirp and I think when they stretch their legs it's about as cute as it gets. I love how some of the bolder chicks now come up and check me out.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I am a passionate home cook, baker, candle and soap maker, banjo picker, hiker, and wood fired oven aficionado.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

we are a recently retired couple (62 and 57), live at 7500 ft elevation in Big Bear California, have a 100 lb German Shepherd, a 40 lb Border Collie, and a cat. We love the outdoors and love being as self sustaining as possible... Not prepping, but just like to produce most everything we use to be as environmentally friendly as we can.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I found the site doing my research while getting ready to get our chickens.
