FIrst time a total failure.....

"9 for 9 dead. No movement when candled and checked each one. A few developed but died at some point."

If most didn't develop at all and quit early on humidity was likey not your problem. Were you using the thermometer that came with the incubator or are you using a different one? The one's that come with the incubators are horribly inaccurate and can be off by several degrees therefore killing your embryos from over or under heating.
I am just trying to get a handle on what issue you had so you don't have it with your next hatch. It can be so frustrating to wait 3 weeks and have nothing to show for it.

Getting truly accurate instruments is the hardest part of incubating. The next thermometer I buy will be one made for incubating, possibly the Egg-Temp with the probe that actually has a very tight accuracy rating.

Jamie ~ I wondered about bringing them in from the cooler temps and dumping them right into 99.5 degrees.

One was a complete dud...the rest had a range of beginning to develop to fully developed. I did use the cheap thermometer that came with it, but bought a new one yesterday.

Thanks peffer and speckledhen.

Sorry that your hatch didn't go well.
But I think you have an awesome attitude about getting right back to it.
I believe if this wasn't such a challenging hobby it would not be so rewarding!

I have had better sucess with the lg by cutting plastic cups to fit under the grate in the corners under the vent holes (so I can refill with a straw) over the sponges which dry out too fast. It took 3 extra cups for me to get the humidity at 70% for hatch but I have a very dry house.

Good luck, I think it is soooo cool that you have wild chooks!
