First time hatching chicks

Ok the first one hatched but something is hanging from its vent?? Like a blob of something and a string connecting to the egg.

It has got up and is knocking the other eggs over everywhere….

The string is still connected to the egg…

That's the 'umbilical cord' that's still connected to the yolk sac and it should dry up and fall off.

Can you post a picture?

Knocking around the eggs is very common. You may start hearing lots of peeping starting now also if you listen close as the new chick that's hatched will "cheer on the others" to come out.

A quick Google to help...

The stringy part dried off but the “stuff” is still at the vent. She looks healthy and alert though.

I think what your seeing is sn umbilical hernia? I haven't experienced this but from what I've read it should dry up and retract back in so to speak.

Here's a thread about it..

I could be wrong here, so wait for others to chime in.
Ok thank you! I posted on that thread.

She’s the only one hatched so there’s no one else to peck at it for now. She seems happy and is chirping away!
