Hello all,

I have a 3 month old Silkie. Recently she developed what looks like dandruff on the skin around her face. She also appears to look like the "poof" on top of her head is constantly wet. My other male Silkie is perfectly fine. I'm just growing concerned that something may be wrong with my little girl.

It's probably nothing to worry about.

My chicken had flaky skin when she was growing new feathers and the heat may be causing your chicken to sweat a little on the head.

Thank you so much chickenlover172! I'm glad it doesn't look concerning.

Hi all. I'm resurrecting this post as I need some help on treating one of my hens. What you see below is on the top of both her wings. The picture does not show how dry and flaky her skin is. It's been like this for 5-6 months and contained to her "shouders", so I'm fairly certain she's not molting. None of my other hens are experiencing this. Any ideas on what this is and how to treat her?

Do you by any chance have a Rooster ? Roosters can "tread" the females causing feather loss...usually on their back but can also result in feather loss on th ewings...if not...maybe treat the chicken for lice/mite infestation...use Permethryn or Sevin Dust...do any of the other females have similar feather losses?

X2. No need to treat if you see no mites (check around the vent at night) or lice (scurrying between feathers and laying eggs at the base of feathers). Scale from feather follicles are commonly shed during moult, and appear as dandruff. Using 2-4 tsp of wheat germ oil mixed in each pound of feed once a week is good for new feather growth. It is also beneficial to supplement water with poultry vitamins-electrolytes 2-3 times a week, and 1 tsp of Probios dispersible powder once a week.

Thanks all! No rooster in my flock, all hens. And none of the others have this. The areas never really change like molting...no new feather growth. As a matter of fact the areas are nearly bald, grayish in color, and the skin is flaking. I would think if she were molting it wouldn't have stayed like that for so long...going on six months with this condition.
