OK, I have seen many posts about flies...and lots of them. I too have had a bad experience with them. So, I went to our local feed store...and the reccomended " Dairy Bomb-Z 55" Its made by Durvet.

For use on Cattle,Horses,Swine,Sheep,Goats,and in homes, Restaurants,Food Handling plants, Dairies, Milk Houses, Cattle, Horse and Poultry, and Swine quarters.
Active ingredients
Pyrethrins....0.5%
Piperonyl Butoxide, Technical.....5.0%
Other ingredients..........94.5%
Equivalent to 4.00% (Butylcarbity) (6-propylpiperonyl) ether and 1.0% of related compounds.

You can spray htis directly ON the birds for lice...and in the nest boxes, roosts, and walls of the coop...to controll flies, gnats, lice, mites.

I would not personally want to eat eggs of chickens sprayed directly with that stuff! Ever. Also would not want to be around when they are sprayed.

Good old fashioned sticky fly paper, at a dollar for four of em, have been keeping my coop just fine.

If you are comfortable with this stuff, I guess that's your business, but please tell anyone who is eating the eggs so that they, like you, can make their own informed choice.

And people, dont assume that because its for sale in the good ol USA it is definitely safe! Agribusiness doesnt have your chickens interest, or your interest, at heart.
 
I also use the fly sticky traps....they work wonderfully. In my barns I use fly bait stations that work great. That way no chemicals are on my critters......ever.
 
Last year we bought those hard plastic fly traps with pherernome in it. Flies go in and can't get out and die.

This year we couldn't find the replacement pherernome, so I used a piece of deli ham. It worked just as well as the pherernome. But it sure does reek when you have to dump the dead flies.

Thats a horse fly spray. I spray it on my own legs and they look nice and shiny. Most brands smell very pretty. Pyranha is a good brand. They put nice conditioners for the skin in them and pretty fragrances.

Pyrethrins is not such a bad chemical at all. It is basically made out of Chrysanthemum flowers! Your birds can even eat the source of the primary ingredient.... mum flowers! I would put it on my birds and I HAVE sprayed it on the ground in their pen when i have seen a fly swarm. Works great!

I would eat the eggs after spraying that around

An alternative to spraying the birds is to hang a pyrethin-based 'no-pest strip' in the coop, above where the birds can peck at it. The wax-based strip will last 3 months. Made by Black Flag, Vapona and a host of other makers. Works on flies, ticks, lice, fleas. A home with a couple of this has housemets that never get fleas.
 
The information provided by Wikipedia is only partially correct. Pyrethrin is only highly toxic to fish and tadpoles, which easily absorb it through their skin. It is not easily absorbed through the skin of mammals and birds, and what does is quickly excreted. It kills insects on contact. This is why it is used as an "organic" bug killer in traps, sprays, and powders. You can use vegetable insect sprays such as Garden Safe (which contain Pyrethrin) right up until the day of harvest.
