FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

FL is warmer…
Interesting. GA seems to get as hot as FL, unless you're in the mountains. Heads up, be prepared for a LOT less rain here than GA receives. If rain is important to you than northern FL or way south seem to get more than the middle of the peninsula. Or, it could just be the sucking vortex where we live where it seems all rain disperses around us to the north and south..........

Interesting, where in FL do you live? It certainly rains a lot here (Atlanta), and is stupid hot in the summer. It’s the winter cold I’m over, grew up in the north and have had my fill…

That snow in Pensacola was worrisome though!

We grew up in the north as well and honestly, would rather be back there for the four seasons but the real estate prices are crazy high right now so that endeavor will have to wait until that changes.
If you think it's stupid hot in the summer there, just wait, you're in for unbelievable hot, humid downright nastiness here over the summer. There is a reason for so many snowbirds. I totally get that.
Missing the snow and cold. Should probably be careful what I wish for.

So I've posted this in a few places. I'm trying whatever I can to get these boys sold. I purchased a shipment of Delawares from a breeder in California. She's retiring now. Anyhow I have way too many cockerels and I will have around 13 culls. Only culls because I don't have the space. If I had more land I would keep 4-5 of them. They were mainly bred for weight. The males are around 4-6 lbs live weight around 12-13 weeks. Females are about 3+ live weight 12-13 weeks. The breeder also paid attention to the SOP and tried to stick as close as she could but weight was the primary goal. Some of these birds may be better quality for show type bird but may not necessarily be as heavy. I will be processing them if they don't find homes. The issue is that they are good quality birds and I hate to destroy good genetics. This breeder was in the business since 2011 and this line has been pure since then.

I'm doing as much as I can to get these boys into homes that will hopefully be used for breeding. I would love to see her work spread around since she is retiring. Finding Delawares at good weight is tough.

I am trying to sell them for $25 right now because these birds cost me a fortune and they cost a second fortune to feed. I am not making any profit on them at this price. They are just about 6 weeks old. Hatched 1/12/25. They are very friendly boys. They come and sit on me the second I am near them. Very good friendly babies. I hang out with them as much as I can in the day.

I am in Florida and I am hoping someone in this state will love these Delawares for breeding. Maybe someone has some females and would enjoy a big male for breeding (and flock protection).

Hello,

I'm a newbie to chickens and am just starting out. I have just relocated to Central Florida; Greenwood, FL to be more specific. I love it here, very small town and country living. I am looking to start getting baby chicks for eggs only. Does anyone know of a hatchery in this area?

"Except in AG-1 districts, no person shall breed or maintain farm animals, fowl, or other livestock within Polk City."

Hello! Long-time owner of chickens in Indiana, but recently found myself in Polk City, Florida, leaving my silkies with some family in Indiana. Now I absolutely take some blame here for not doing more research, but I was told by multiple people, realtor and previous owner included, before I purchased my property, that hens would be allowed within city limits in Polk City. I didn't question it at the time, as I know surrounding Polk County cities do allow small flocks. There's even a Farm and Feed supply store right down the road that sells chicks/ducklings! The city itself has a very rural feel.

I don't live in a neighborhood with an HOA, and I'm on a bit less than half an acre of land, but unfortunately, we're zoned R, not AG. I guess my question is... Is there a specific reason that anyone knows of, as to why we're the only city in Polk that doesn't allow even a small flock of hens? If not, does anyone have any advice on how I'd go about contacting the city or making a case? I'm also permanently disabled, so it's virtually impossible for me to get out there and gather signatures, which I know would increase the chance of success. On a related note, I would not be able to go forward and advocate for it either in front of any council, but I would be able to write to someone, which, I'm not sure if that's even a possibility.

Any guidance would be appreciated. I miss my silkies so much, as they are my pets, and they gave me a routine, a reason to go outside: To care for them. I definitely regret not doing more research on this location. :(
Hello all! I'm posting this here too, in case anyone here knows anything!

I'm sorry you gave up your babies to move to FL.

You may want to contact your local representative, the county commissioners office, city board of trustees, the city council, the mayors office, whomever you can.

That is why Realtors say FL is a "buyer beware" state. They often don't know the legal restrictions of a given area, which we learned, and they really don't seem to care to want to help. It's such a transient state they tell clients to do their own research. Very difficult to do from out of state. I'm sorry you were ill-informed. The previous owner either didn't know or just said they were allowed in order to make the sale. Hopefully, the realtor didn't act in poor faith. Contact them for suggestions as well.

Perhaps your city can make an exception if they were therapy chickens. Get a physician's statement to support this. I implore you to not give up. I wish you the best of luck.

@Bawkbok I appreciate the time you took to respond, that is very, very helpful! I'll definitely attempt to contact some of them and explain the situation. I wish I could advocate better for myself in person, but I unfortunately often go nonverbal in real life. I can express myself through writing fairly well though!

I think that is an option, as I do have a physician (in Florida!) who has already stated they would back me up to make them emotional support animals, but I just really want to make sure I'm doing things the correct way. I really don't want any conflict with the city over something like this!
