hello, i have a 2 year (ish) old hen and i believe she has fowl pox. its pretty late stage, affected her face and eyes, she has warts on her comb and wattle, they arent black, just pink/pale/yellow , she can barely see, i have to gently pry open her eyes every morning (its been about 2 days with her being blind) we've been applying vaseline as we thought it may be mites but the severity just seems too bad.

her mother (who is still alive) had "mite problems" when she was younger, i cant remember it but theres a chance she also had to deal with it as my mother (who treated the old hen) said that this new case is mites, it isnt.

how can i assist for her to get better, does my flock have pox and i dont know because its early stage?

ive mixed water with her food in a bowl to hydrate her at least a little because otherwise she wont drink. she was drenched incase it was mites a few days ago and no longer has an infestation.

she also smells pretty bad? her mouth and throat are fine, so it's just dry pox, I don't understand why she smells but it's like a wet old meat smell, I'm assuming the swelling and wounds just smell bad, should I stop vaseline application?

Fowl pox usually runs it’s course and most will recover if they don’t get complications, such as wet pox, yellow patches inside the beak and throat, or eye or respiratory infection. Don’t disturb the scabs. I would use some Terramycin eye ointment twice a day in the eyes of those who have swollen eyelids or crud in their eyes. Help them to eat moistened chicken feed as you are doing. May e add a bit of probiotics or a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt to food. Let us know how she gets along.

ive been giving her sauerkraut in her mash because i didnt have yogurt, is this ok? apparently its good probiotics and should give her decent vitamins like vitamin c

also, how can i give her eyedrops if her eyes are swollen shut? they arent able to open on their own anymore and i have to guide her to her bowl of food

also she has been rubbing her face against her wing, shes pretty clearly itchy but no signs of mites, it’s interrupting her eating, is there any way i can help with the itchiness?

Sauerkraut may be useful, but make sure that she is getting some grit to digest it. Maybe you can use a wet cloth for a warm compress for a few minutes or some saline on her eyes to soften any crust that may be making them hard to open. Try then opening the lower eyelid pouch to apply drops or ointment. Ointment on the outside may also soften them to help open them.
