I did 4x8 and have 6 posts all made from 2x4s. The four corners and then two in the middle. it is just better that way in case you need to crawl in there. Check out my profile for pics.

For a 4 x 8 coop I would add a pair of posts in the middle. I'm planning on building a 4 x 6 but won't be adding any middle posts. I hope to complete mine by the weekend after next, working on it this weekend and next (off and on).
Where did you get your netting / hardware cloth? It looks like the best stuff to use for our coop and run. I found some 1" hexagonal fencing, but from what I've read that might not provide sufficient protection for our chickens. Thanks! Here are a few new pictures of the coop, and the addition of the chicks to their new home!
- Here is the run. One side is a pea gravel/ sand mix and the other side is rye grass. We know the grass will go quickly but will continuously add is plants, etc. for them to enjoy.
-Here are the various doors/ access points we have to the coop and run. The first picture is a door that allows access to under the coop which will house food and water. This door allows easy access to changing out the feeders and waterers.
- The second picture is the access to the actual coop. Eventually, we will add a chain to hold the door up when working on the inside. Since the door swings up, it will be easy to clean the coop.
- The third picture is the chickens access to the run. We will add a string to allow us to move the door up and down easily.
-The inside of the coop for now. The chicks are still only 3.5 weeks old, so we will be building a better roost to allow them to roost higher, etc. The bedding is currently lined with newspaper and pine shavings. The nest boxes are also lined in pine shavings.
- We are hoping to add in a window to the outside face to allow us to see inside without disturbing the chickens.
- There is a skylight built into the coop to allow for natural light. Roof is covered with corrugated sheets to help run the rain off. You can see the access to the nesting boxes off the back.
- We moved the chickens in yesterday. They seem to be enjoying the increase in space. Added the light in case they get cool; however, the weather here is still about 50F.
Please give us any comments, positive or negative, to help make our chickens happy!![]()
I am basically done with my coup. The front has a flip down door so I can pull out the poop tray. I put the nesting boxes on the back and the access door on the side. I have a little more trim to do around the nesting boxes. I did not go directly by the plans, just used them as a guide. We are working on the run now and will put hardware cloth around the bottom of the coop too.

Very nice!I also just finished my coop that I based on the Purina plans. You can see all of the pictures that I took along the way under my profile. I still need to build a run area (We have a lot of hawks in the area). I'm working on the run area now and hope to get 3 RI Reds in a couple of weeks. I have AutoCad files and PDF's of the plans I drew up. They are not completely accurate but might give someone an idea on how to build. I'm going to update them the best I can in the next few days and make them available to anyone interested.
