Good morning duck and chicken friends!
We planted a Mexican elderberry and Arabian lilac in our duck run. Both give the deep shade they need during the heat of the summer. They do not eat either, except the yellow/white flowers and fruit that falls from the elderberry. Both are like bushes so they do not go up into the interior and can grow 20x20 but you can trim into small trees. The lilac is a weepy type while the elderberry is upright. Both grow fast in the summer and do well in our soil here in the Sonoran desert. The elderberry needs more water, but we repurpose the duck water in the run and throughout the other gardens on our property. The lilac leaves have a lovely purple color in the cooler months with small flowers and is in the vitex family. There are other varieties called chase or munk tree.

I use the flowers from the elderberry for our "city farm" homestead bouquet herbal tea and will do another post on "how to harvest the flowers". If you would like a cutting and live in Mesa, Arizona, U.S.A. message me. We do plan on doing a plant n seed exchange in Tucson, end of September. All the locations will be posted on our website on which gardening stands we are going to, hopefully annonced by the end of July.

Our "city farm" homestead grows plants and flowers for the use of a bouquet herbal tea infusion.
This time of year here in the Sonoran desert in Mesa, Arizona U.S.A. they are in full bloom. If you grow this where you live, the best way to harvest the flowers is doing it when they are fresh picked. You do not want the stems or leaves, they are toxic.
I use a large bowl and rub the tiny flower off and let them sit out to dry over night. Your fingers will get yellow from the pollen, but these are such a great addition to any tea infusion.

We don't mind wildlife visiting here at the "city farm" homestead headquarters in Mesa, Arizona since we plant for the wildlife, but.. if they bring their family for breakfast, lunch and 🍽 we will have to block our veggie raised beds.
Have a lovely afternoon!

If you have ever wondered what seed pods look like, you can catch them right now at the #2 "city farm" homestead headquarters

Mesa, Arizona 85205 U.S.A.

Right next to the garden wagon.
We have Swiss chard (red stalk/stem) arugula (pretty dainty white flowers) kale (taller wispy, hard to see flowers) & Romain lettuce (yellow flowers)
Each seed pods can have up to 20 seed's. These will be harvested and shared as they are open pollinated and a great way to show the life of a plant.

For those of you that don't know, we have co-host's. They help the stand owners through out the year. This co-host has been helping so many Phoenix gardening stands, and now has now become a host. Jeff Adams, the #40 in Tempe, Arizona U.S.A. stand gave her the name "legend" during a crazy storm we had during a plant n seed exchange and stand tour. We drove through torrential rain & winds, but she pushed through. We are some extreme fun gardening people, we hope to see you at one of our events!
We allowed her to choose her number and if you ever get to meet her, she will share whatever she has. Stayed tune for a community article that was published for the gardening stand she has started.
#200 A River Runs Through It
