Talked to a neighbor and she told me about some places she is getting produce, those don’t let this go to waste type of things, so I’m going to check those out. Sounds like a great way to get stuff for canning . I traded eggs for some of her haul today; she had two huge boxes full of various things. I got some nice looking white onions, a few tomatoes, some are green for frying, several bunches of parsley for the crew and some poblano peppers. I made a batch of jalapeño jelly, Igor requested it, so I’ll take a jar of that over to her later. We’re all excited because the Harris hawks have two babies; the guys have been stalking them with their telescopes and comparing notes about where we think the nest is in the treeWe’re nerds Powder continues to fight broody breaking so I’m going to have to put my foot down I guess. A couple of nights and a day in the shade garden are coming for her while our temps are in the mid 80’s.

Nice of your neighbor to give you a heads up on a produce provider.

Years ago when my mom canned, she made acquaintance with the grocery story produce manager and was able to get lots of stuff they were going to toss. Might be another avenue, unless things are much more restricted now.

I have thought about that but haven’t gone so far as to talk to anyone. Some of the produce I got today is going straight to the compost, it looks pretty gross. I’ll probably give both of these a try and go with the one I think has the better quality. Cheap is one thing, but not if you have to throw a bunch away.

Do chat up your produce people! They can be terrific allies. Usually if you want stuff to can they can give you a better price if you take the whole box.
