I have two maran chickens that I purchased about a month ago. Not long after I got them I noticed a bit of blood in their poops so I wormed them......after that they seemed a little better. Well then I noticed tremendous weightloss so I was told maybe it was coccidiosis (mispelled i'm sure) Now they are worse and are making a raspy noise runny nose and eyes runny and shut and are making the "gape" movement and have almost stopped eating........What's treatment for this? I tried Duramycin 10 as well for a respitory infection but no help there either.

Gapeworm is a type of roundworm that attaches itself to the host's trachea and sometimes travels to the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing, and often times death by suffocation. It is a danger to chickens who eat an earthworm, slug or snail infected with the gapeworm larvae. Often an affected hen will seem to have a respiratory problem, 'gaping' her mouth open when she breathes, coughing and making gurgling noises.Pullets under eight weeks old are the most susceptible, but chickens of any age can contract gapeworm. However, adding apple cider vinegar, food-grade Diatomaceous Earth and fresh minced garlic to your flock's diet can help guard against worm infestations and the natural wormer Verm-X can be used to treat gapeworm if your hens do contract them.Gapeworm, while scary-sounding and potentially life-threatening if not treated, is actually not very common in backyard flocks. It is only contracted from infected worms, slugs and snails, and I don't believe that the slight risk should deter you from feeding your chickens (or allowing them access to) earthworms and other nutritious wiggling, squirming, squishy treats.

i got this from a site called fresh eggs daily hope this helps http://www.fresh-eggs-daily.com/2013/06/dont-let-fear-of-gapeworm-keep-you-from.html

The information you provided about gapeworm is true. The treatments for gapeworm (and other types of worms) from the link you provided is misinformation. ACV, DE, garlic, and VermX will not prevent nor treat worm infestations.

Most likely they have a respiratory disease. Since the duramycin was ineffective (if they drank any of it,) dose them w/ tylan 50 injectable orally 1/2cc once a day for 5-7 days. Or you can inject it into the breast muscle 1/2cc once a day for 3-5 days. Your other option is to cull them.
BTW, what wormer did you use?

They are eating and drinking well today but still making the raspy noise and the gasping for air movement. We used wazine-17 for wormer. I dont know if theres enough meat or muscle there to inject them they are so thin now. Their eyes are runny and one side even looks a little swollen now

If they are eating and drinking well, it's certainly not gapeworms. They have a respiratory disease and it sounds like it's getting worse. I recommend that you cull them immediately. If you already have an existing flock, chances are that your other healthy birds will become infected as well. Most respiratory diseases can be carried on clothing, your hands, shoes, feeders and waterers etc...there are treatments for these diseases, but birds are never cured of whatever disease it is and if it's a virus, antibiotics are ineffective.

Ok well i decided to try the tylan 50 to give them a chance we are on day two well.tonight is the second dose so im hoping to see improvement soon. I try not to get too attached but i have and i dont want to kill them without at least trying

Does anybody know whether gapeworm make chickens thirsty?? My winedott keeps stretching her neck and holding her mouth open and unfortunately is showing symptoms, and she's drinking like mad? Also if this is gapeworm how long has she got left? I don't know what medicines are available here in the UK Albany information would be highly appreciated! Thanks guys!
