So my brother wants to get some coturnixes, and we were wondering :
1) is it possible to place them with the hens or with the pigeons. Or should we build a different coop just for them.
2) They seem to be able to fly, are they homing like pigeons or do they actually stay where they are? Or do they run away?
3) What do they eat?
4) Do they have any laying potential or meat potential?
5) Are coturnixes an overall good idea?

1. Different coop, they can transmit diseases and they have different enclosure needs.
2. They can’t fly long distances
3.( article below)
4. They have good potential for both.
5. I would say yes, but I guess it really depends on what you what them for.

You probably want to start with the articles on quail.

It is usually not a good idea to mix species. Chickens often carry diseases that they are resistant to but quail are not.

They can fly, though not very well. They will run away, and EVERYTHING likes to eat them. You need to make sure that they are securely enclosed both to keep them in and to keep predators out.
3) What do they eat?
Game bird or turkey feed usually works. @GodLovesU already linked to this article, so you should probably start there.
4) Do they have any laying potential or meat potential?
Coturnix quail are good layers and are also delicious. You can see some cooking ideas here.
5) Are coturnixes an overall good idea?
If you want to raise quail, coturnix are probably your best beginner quail.
