Giant mealworms - are they sterile?

I know this thread is pretty old, but just in case anybody is searching for info on Giant Mealworms...

I ordered my giant mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) from RainbowMealWorms.net

When I learned they might be sterile and that nobody seemed to know for sure, I contacted them. Our correspondence is below. Hopefully this will help somebody.

me: Hi,
I ordered some of your Giant Mealworms without knowing enough about them apparently.

Giant Mealworms are treated with a growth inhibitor hormone? is that correct?

And if they do make it to beetle stage, are they sterile?

Thank you for any info you can provide,

RainbowMealWorms: Hi!

Our regular mealworms and giant mealworms only differ in size. Our regular mealworms are available in sizes from 1/4" (mini) to 1" (large) and will undergo pupation to become a grain beetle.

Our Giant mealworms have been forced to remain a larvae instead of pupating. The energy that they harness as larvae for turning into a pupae is instead channeled into making them grow 50% larger in width and length to 1.5" long. It is a myth that we give them a strange hormone to make them grow bigger; they only have the exact same hormones that any young unpupated mealworm larvae has.

Thank you for your question, we are very happy to help in any way we can, and thank you so much for your order!

Sincerely,

Me: ok. That sounds great. So, the resulting Giant mealworm beetles are not sterile then?

Thanks again.

RainbowMealWorms: Hi!

They aren't sterile but because they have used all their energy to grow rather than pupate they have a very low percentage of worms that will be able to go through pupation through its full duration. The ones that are able to will mate and have babies who will, of course, be regular sized mealworms.

Me: ok. that's what I thought you'd say. Thank you so much for all the info.

After reading the thread about mealworms here on BYC I decided to raise some for my chickens. I bought a carton at our local feed store and put them in a plastic box with oatmeal, bran and a couple of slices of potato. They seem to be doing fine, but I just read a post on the mealworm thread that the giant ones are sterile. I checked the carton mine came in and they are giants! Has anyone had experience with the giants? If they are sterile I may as well feed them to the chickens and start over.

Hi, I realize this thread is very old, but I can help! :) Giant Mealworms are a regular mealworm that has been sprayed with replicated hormones of a mealworm. It basically makes them grow longer before turning into a beetle. Therefore, it is a much larger mealworm. The hormones do not hurt the worm or their reproductiveness. They will lay eggs and you don't need to worry. BTW There are myths that Giant Mealworms can't reproduce, which is completely false, so do not listen to that.

I bought Giant Mealworms and if you separate them into a small individual containers (with no food), they will pupate. I now have a colony of Giants that are producing and eating like crazy.

Are they producing more Giants or just regular meal worms. I saw above there was a response from Rainbow Mealworms which is where I buy mine from that says the Giants will only produce regular meal worms and that they only become Giants from being prevented from pupating ?

Will they create more Giants or just regular meal worms ?

I guess mine are technically Superworms, they produce the big ones. They don't reproduce as fast as the regular mealworms but are really big. You have to keep them warm, they die if they get cold.
