GOAT LEG PROBLEMS PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

I went out to feed my Alpine buck this morning and found him laying on his side not abled to get up...i helped him get to his house and have given him a lot of food, he has an apple tree in his pasture so I really hope that he just ate too many rotten apples and will eat/sleep it off but i dont want to just assume that so I gave him a 3mL shot of pennecillin...he was recently wormed if tht could have anything to do with it, ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY USEFUL...THANKS!!!

I would have called a vet straight away...... Does he seem distressed? can he stand yet? look at the colour around his eye, is he pale? is he grinding his teeth? I would also lay off the food, if it is a problem with his digestive system then he doesn't want anymore food to add to the problem, do you know if he is pooing and peeing properly? Just realised you are probably not in the UK so not as much time has past as I first thought, please get a vet if you do not know what is wrong and good luck

unfortunately there isn't a real vet that takes goat around...and he seems completley normal except for he can't walk...his poop was completely normal but I haven't seen him pee...I'm really hoping I'm overreacting and he just had way too many rotten apples, thanks

If there is a cattle vet in your area, call and see if they will look at him. If he is down and can't get up on his own at all then he may be in serious trouble. There is no way for anyone on this forum to know what could be wrong with him from your description of his symptoms. Any vet is better than no vet at all.

He is doing better now but his back legs are like stiff, I'm hoping to go out in the morning to him runnin to me for food and some affection, if not I'll try to find a vet that takes cattle and give them a call

When was last time he was wormed? Do you alternate wormers. We use Safegaurd, ivomec plus injectable, then cidectin. Worms can cause all kinds of symptoms. Next antibiotics. Have you given him anything. bladder infection, encephalitis, ear infections can all cause difficulties. If it was me and it was my goat I would worm him with one brand of wormer you haven't used then I would give him injection of one and one half or 1 1/2 ml of oxytetracycline to cover a problem that isn't seen. Stiff back legs can mean worms in animals. The antibiotic injection is for adult goat I didn't see an exact age listed or weight. But I give an adult 1 1/2 cc small adult 1 cc and baby 1/2 cc under skin in the neck. I am not a vet but we raise lots of goats and right now have 75 head. I take 1 cup sugar 2 tsp salt and large ice cream bucket full of water and put in front of him to drink. That helps them with energy. Electrolytes are good to add to water for them to drink to and always make an effort to help them get to their feet if they are not walking alone. Alot of times they will be able to walk if you get them up so they can balance it isn't good for them to just lay.

Do you have a large deer population in your area? If so, I'd suspect Meningeal Worm. It is a parasite of deer, but it gets 'lost' in a goat and can cause severe problems. You would need to give a double dose of safeguard (it can cross the blood brain barrier, where the worm is, in the spinal meninges) for five days, injectable ivermectin (to get any that aren't in the meninges), and banamine (for pain and also to reduce inflammation against the spinal tissue).

A goat that is down is a serious problem, they won't just sleep it off. Goats are excellent at hiding illnesses, until it gets bad. A down goat will often soon be a dead goat. I am not trying to scare you, I lost a goat to bloat, despite treating her as soon as she went down.

Has he had a CDT vaccine? Penicillin dosage is 1cc per 25lbs.

Sounds more like bloat or tetanus. Any updates??

This sounds like Urinary Calculi to me.

Drench him with Fruit Fresh or Vitamin C/Ascorbic acid ASAP.
