Goats hair loss. I’ve been used to shedding for eight years but there’s something else creating bald spots almost.

I’ve got two goats that are losing significant amounts of hair. I’ve had them for eight years, so I’m used to shedding this time of year but they’re starting to get bald patches. I cleaned out their shelter this weekend and looked for bugs. Can’t find any of them, or in the shelter. Any thoughts from any goat owners? I’ve got two other goats bit of a different breed that don’t seem to be having this problem.

Give them a good dusting of louse powder and then spray with BluKote. Either lice or a fungus (or both) is the likely cause of the problem

I’ve inspected them pretty thoroughly. And did an extra thorough shelter cleaning. I can’t find a sign of any type of bug. Joanne get skin issues a lot this time of year, but never seen this bad and it usually only seems to be her. But this time it’s her brother as well. I was finally able to get a hold of the spray so I’ll try that this evening. ( they are not a fan, so it makes for an interesting evening lol) I was just a little alarmed because it’s usually only on her legs but this time it’s her and her brother on their legs and back and all.

I am guessing these are Boer Goats? Is it dry and scaly or just balding?
Yep you guessed it! The two that are having the issues are Nubian boer crosses. Not scaly though. I was just amazed at all the sudden, the amount of hair everywhere! And only one of them usually has skin issues and only on her legs this time of year so I was surprised that her brother is getting the same issue but both of them it’s their lakes and their back and everything. Just strange.

It looks like a fungus infection of some sort. I had a buck that was out in pasture come in almost bald. I gave him a good spray of BluKote. He looked pretty funny when I finished. How often do you have a purple buck? Anyway, I saw improvement in a very few days. Although there were several bucks in that pasture, he was the only one that was affected.

That’s what I was guessing. She does get fungal infections at least once a year, but usually doesn’t go on her back. Blu kote works fo fungal infections? That’s pretty cool. I learned something new today.
