Hi all,

I've just finished building a coop. Unfortunately, due to may rainy weekends in the spring and too many summer days over 100 degrees, its taken me a lot longer than planned - so it was completed too late in the year to buy chicks.

The coop articles on BYC were really helpful as I was making my design (thank you), and I joined here hoping to give something back by writing an article documenting mine. But it looks like I have to make a number of posts in the forums before I can post an article. Anyone know how many are required?

Cheers,

Steve

Welcome.
While some seasons can be challenging, it is possible to start chicks any time of year. They are only temperature sensitive for 5 to 8 weeks depending on ambient temperature.
The benefit of starting now is that they'll be laying eggs by spring. Starting in the spring, they won't lay till fall and if not started by April, laying will be delayed by shortening days.
If summers are regularly around 100 there, start now by planting some shade sources for your future charges. Heat will kill chickens quicker than cold.
It has ranged from minus 19 F to 112 F here. Never lost a bird to cold but have from heat.

welcome!
