Is the lava rocks what everyone else puts there? I seen a space like that full of creeping phlox. It was pretty. Rock looks good too though

It is lava rock. I didn't use lava rock at my last place. They were bigger river rock. Pretty colors. I'm seeing a lot of river rock in this area, one down the way is big! A white rock.
I'm using some white rock up under my windows in part of my flower beds.
I have a couple of different grasses in mind. Not using both, have to choose which one.
