Granny's gone and done it again

The summer of '65 the two of us and an infant child at pretty well on $5 a week. We ate a lot of rice, ground beef with mushroom soup over it and deviled eggs. Egg salad put me in the hospital for two weeks flat of my back attached to an IV. We have manage somehow to eat ever since by working every how many jobs we had too. Now we work in the dirt still putting food away for stormy days that are coming. Food that we grow is a source of income that is not taxed. We have a family that we can barter with for hair cuts and another that we can barter with for food items we cannot grow. We've been survivors all of our lives. We help now a shelter for battered women with food, vegetable seed and plants for their garden they plant. It seems like dodging punches has been a way of life for over 7 decades but some how we are still standing. I remember a family that rode the welfare system back in the mid 70's and they were getting what ever they asked for. This was in NW MO. One time they wanted to go camping and after they got their gear furnished they went camping and then brought their gear back to the store where they bought it for a refund. That was a pattern with them. Those kinds of actions hardened the hearts of to many folks to the point they stopped or never started helping less fortunate families.
You have become self reliant for sure Larry. You will surely be self reliant for those stormy days ahead. Smart couple you two. Wish I could still garden! Buying a lot of frozen vegetables for our future running low. Whatever I can get, best get it now. Of course it won't last me as long as needed. Man I wish I could work in a garden again.

I'm going out early in the morning to thaw out the water fountains with a propane torch after a low of 13° by daybreak. Going to measure the depth of snow too. I was expecting a dusting and we got what is a blizzard down here. In MO the school busses would have ran and all would be normal. The city of Dothan, AL is the largest city we have to go to for specialist and other advanced medical care is closed down. No roads or streets are open.

Most all of the needed see for this summers garden are in house now. A table is setup with a seed starting warming mat and a grow light system so we can start early with better variety for our growing conditions than what the box stores sell in their garden centers.
I'm trying to get into gardening. Is it ok to just wait until it's warmer and plant my seeds outside or should I start them inside no matter what. Sorry I kinda jumped into the conversation lol

I've slept most all day today.

You are most welcome here to jump right in. If you don't have lights that will provide the type of lighting for plants to grow and not get spindly.

We were poor when my brother and I were kids but we never went hungry. Mom and Dad saw to that. Tough times made me a tough adult able to survive when life through some curves. I'd much rather be a survivor.

DH went to South America several times on medical missions. Suspected that the crime lords running the villages didn't want their people to become too literate. They were easier controlled if they were 'dumb'. He stopped doing the missions fearing for his own safety after awhile.

It's a mixed up screwed up crazy old world, folks.

@Nomadicus and @Rambling Iris, you two are good people. We'd be proud to call you our neighbor.

Some things are directly seeded in the ground like corn, beans, beets, carrots, etc.
