Granny's gone and done it again

I did not know you could know that much about soil. interesting lol
You local extension service can run a soil analysis for you and tell you what you really need to add to the soil to get a good crop of what it is you want to grow. Many have failed who thing added just compost is good enough. Wrong. Soil science is not a one size fits all. What grows great green beans will not produce great sweet corn.

I'm getting ready to start a garden again this year. I have had several bad years at it, partly due to health issues, mostly my inability to keep it up properly and also MOSTLY that I live in a rain forest....but, we are going a lot of work on our raised beds and hopefully will have tomatoes, beans, peppers, garlic and strawberries next summer. I will start them in a greenhouse shortly and hope to be planting small plants and not seedlings in May. The garlic is already in the ground, of course, and sprouting as it should in our area, so that is a hopeful sign.

We did use our composted chicken manure and also dirt from our compost mound in the garden bed for the garlic, so we will do something like that in the others as well. Not the strawberries, they have become a wild thing that has taken over one garden bed. They need nothing but perhaps a bird netting.

Oh, and I bought the cutest herb garden stand for my deck. I can plant 8 herbs in it and just walk out the door to get what I need. That's a new experiment this year.

All will be in soon...next week or two. All in the greenhouse, of course.

During the ice age glaciers formed across the continent and when they receded they carried the top soil from the south north to the mid west. In MO I had that same black clay loam that required a lot of organic matter to be added to it.
Well I stand corrected. Yeah I'm here in SE MO and I can testify that the soil here def needs to be augmented with organic material. AND have rocks eliminated, lol! Is why I plan to compost my chickrn's daily contributions.

I used wheat straw to control weeds in NW MO. That added much organic matter to help loosen a tight soil.
