Now I know why it is called the butt. I see the padding. It's been smoking for 10 1/2 hours now.

The term "Boston butt" comes from the practice of New England butchers packing pork shoulder into large barrels called "butts" for storage and transportation. The name "butt" stuck even after the practice of barrel packing was discontinued.

I believe wine is also stored in butts. I don't know why they are called that, though.
