I finally had to ban my buddies from my porch---just got too tired hosing every evening, getting poop slurry splashed on my legs, the walls, and French glass doors. They still have the entire shaded lawn and a bazillion acres to roam, and now I have coffee with them under the tree instead.
What works fantastically is this motion activated sprinkler!

(I got mine 40% off on a fill-a-bucket sale at Ace Hardware.)
At first I was worried about also restricting my dog's access, but he's learned where to walk to get around it or to wait for the spray to stop and rush past. The chickens have not figured this out and they don't challenge it. I've had a clean, chicken-less porch for a month now.
It works so well, I bought another to put near our unfenced young fruit trees to ward off the deer.

p.s. Just remember to warn your guests as they cross your lawn!!!

Great idea! You'll need one that throws snowballs at them in the winter though  (if you have a winter, that is).
Hmmm, never thought of that!! You're right! Thankfully I live in Arizona, but it sure wouldn't work during freezing weather elsewhere...unless you had it on a heater and then that's getting complex...

You might get away with just the sprinkler if you're in a warmer climate, but over here it wouldn't work for half the year... Though maybe if you train them during the warmer half, they'll learn to avoid the area just in case and maybe it will hold until you can turn the sprinklers on again :D

Here's how to add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!
