I just had someone ask me if I was doing chickens that lay green egg because he had been told that they are cholesterol free. Has anyone else heard about this. I told him I had not heard about this but that I would check for him. Anyone have any experience with this?

I've never heard they are completely cholesterol free, but free range eggs are just generally healthier than "factory produced". Mother Earth News has this chart comparing the nutritional levels of several breed eggs that, while not comprehensive, is kinda interesting:

And this site has a good explanation of why our pampered chickys lay healthier eggs:

False.. There's no way for a chicken egg to be completely cholesterol free...
Here is a very interesting article about the cholesterol in eggs though..

I thought it was a pretty interesting read..
There's a few researchers studying the effects of feeding hens red yeast rice as a supplement to decrease the cholesterol in the eggs produced.. So far, they've found it to lower it about 14%..

Of course, egg whites are cholesterol free, but, if you eat the yolks, you're eating cholesterol..

Can't get the links to work!? I tried going to the Science News site, but can't find the articles. Could you tell me what heading you found them under? I'd love to read 'em, 'specially about supplementing red yeast rice. Of course, then I'll need to read about red yeast rice, cuz I've never heard of it,

!!

Thanks!

Yeah me either. I was figuring it was some kind of a gimmick. I am not sure who told him that but I figured you know I never even did any research in EE's and their eggs so I figured I would ask and maybe it was something I just hadn't heard of. I think he was looking at buying farm fresh eggs but that he needed lower cholesterol lol.

If I do that he will probably start charging me full price for my horse hay lol.

Seriously though looking online they were saying that free range pasture raised eggs have 1/3 less Cholesterol and also have more vitamin A, Omegatin and another vitamin that I can't remember. I guess there was a study done to test the nutrient content of free range pasture fed over cage raised and the nutrient content of home raised eggs is much better than cage raised. It was pretty interesting.

No egg is cholesterol free. I did just read an article about chickens raised with access to pasture and greens generally have about a third less cholesterol than the typical store bought egg. I think the article was referencing that same Mother Earth study. That may explain the confusion: they were talking about chickens who eat GREENS, not green colored shells.
