My husband and I got our first chickens after our last child moved out in 2010 . They were my new kids. We designed and built our hen house and housed our first dozen chickens. Our first chicks were Gold Laced Wyandotte. I got a different breed each year so I would be able to keep track of how old they were. We have had Columbian and Silver Laced Wyandotte Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Barred Rock, Speckled Sussex, Austrolorp. Black Star (hybrid), White Leghorn, Salmon Frivelle, and Silkie (I hope I didn't leave anyone out). Some breeds we've had more than once.
We currently have 25 hens and one rooster. One of our granddaughters is now picking some of the breeds as she shows chickens in 4H. This will be her 3rd year showing chickens in 4H. She wanted to try add Polish this year and my husband really wanted a Mottled Houdan rooster, so we have one of them coming also. Our 17 chicks should arrive in March. We enjoy raising chickens and involving the grandkids in their care and decisions and showing. The eggs are SO much better than store bought eggs! We also have goats and 2 grandsons sho them in 4H. We love the outdoors and other hobbies are Bass Fishing, Camping, Hiking, Canoeing etc. Besides Chickens and goats. We also have 2 dogs. 3 children and 3 children-in-law (truly 6 children, we just didn't raise 3 of them), and 5 grandchildren. I just found BYC today while reading about chickens. I wanted to comment on someone's question, that is why I joined.
