Guest just gave my 2 day old duckling some veg!

I fought hard to birth these ducklings. Please help. No way to get store bought grit anywhere. Can I give them sand and tiny pepples from my driveway?!

Peas from my freezer.

They were watching them for me while I ran a few errands.

I have since offered them gritty sand/tiny pebbles from my driveway as advised by another person on here. I think I am still traumatised by their births. I imagined the worst outcome.

They are good. They both consumed the grit I supplied and they have more interest in their duck and goose starter. No ill effects from the incident.

Although your guest should have asked first, I have always given my ducklings (and adult ducks) frozen peas, both as treats and because they provide extra niacin. Some folks will say the peas should be thawed first, but my ducks are fine with frozen ones.

It just caught me off guard after traumatic assisted hatchings and several deaths. I hadn't organised grit of any kind and they were not even really eating their starter yet. I only found out by accident they were given veg. What happens if ducks eat foods that require them to have grit and they do not have grit?
