Hi, my guineas are 4.5 months old. I had no idea that they would lay this young lol. But the 1st egg was thin but pretty firm. But the last 2 eggs i found were soft. I began putting oyster shells in their food once I found the 1st egg. My question is...how long does it take to start seeing a difference in the shells?

Also, once they start laying, do they lay often? Cuz it's been a month and I've found 3 eggs over the past month, but broken. I'm sure they're laying out in the tall grass cuz they free range over 10 acres. But I was hoping I'd find more in their coop in the morning before i let them out. I've been looking for eggs every day but haven't found any out in the grass yet.

Do not put the oyster shell in the food. Oyster shell should be offered free choice only. The hens need it but it can be bad for the males. Once they begin eating the oyster shell, they are capable of laying normal eggs the nest day. It may take longer depending on how low their bodies were on Calcium.

Guineas do no normally begin laying until the spring following the year they were hatched. In areas of long days they may begin laying in the fall of the year of which they were hatched. They typically will only lay for a few weeks before stopping and beginning again the next spring.

When guinea hens get into their main laying, each hen will lay one egg every day until she goes broody or it is the end of laying season.
