For the prickly pear mission, yes wait for that prickly pear to recover and definitely handle with care. spines can grow from unexpected places.... SO:

Optional Gloves. Avoid hands that feel like pincushions.
Plant some distance away from the birds (they will peck spines for fun you see).

Pheasant bonus: If the pears give fruit, you’ll have so called "dinosaur snacks" for the rest of your life.

(P.S. If any plant dies, blame the mods. As we know, it’s always their fault.)

I need to water everything here, even prickly pear in august. I can also pick up prickly pear fruit by the road till mine fruit some day.

That's a smart move! It’s great at least that you can pick up fruit nearby for now. That will be great! Hopefully, your prickly pear will thrive and bear fruit soon! Keep me posted on how it goes!

Gotta love Texas! Even in Colorado we would still be waiting. Of course in a couple weeks it will be too hot to go outside at all!
