Hi All,

I have hatched quite a few chicks and ducklings however have never had this issue and quite concerned for this little duckling.

So it hatched last night, was quite a small duck egg, similar to our chicken eggs so I wasn't concerned when it started to pip a few days early (day 24).

Last night (day 25) it hatched but seems to be stuck to it's remaining shell by a blood clot, there is also quite a bit of sticky yellow goo so not sure it it's ruptured it's yolk sack also.

I have tried to attach the best photo I could get.

I was hoping over night it would have dried up and unattached itself however I have woken up to it being in the same situation, every so often trying it's hardest to knock the shell off that it is stuck to via this blood clot.

I'm not sure at this point whether to help or leave it, so far I have removed some of the shell just so I could see what it was actually stuck to however did not damage any of the internal vessels still showing inside the egg.

This would now be coming towards the end of day 26.

Any advice welcomed.... I also had a batch of chicks in due at a similar time so not sure if this has egged the duckling to hatch prematurely?

Thank you 🙏

Hi,

Boy, that's a toughy. I would leave it in the incubator longer to see if that'll dry up as if you picked up the duckling and that rips, it could bleed out.

I hope it makes it!

The duckling kicked off the shell itself that evening... However it seems to have wry neck.

We are helping it with feeding and drinking every few hours also giving vitamin E, egg yolk, crumb made into mash and nutritional yeast.

It with kick with it's legs however can't lift it's head, I feel like this is going to be along road to good health but it's my little boys first attempt at hatching a duckling so we are giving it a good go!
