I just ordered from Townline and I haven't received my chicks yet so I cannot comment on the after receiving them part. But the customer service was great when ordering and I also did research to find the best hatchery and I have yet to find anything negative about them. I think their prices are awesome too.
I am a little biased because I live in Lebanon where cackle hatchery is located, but, I have only had one chick out of maybe sixty die from them and I am pretty sure it was from my kids playing with them when I wasn't here. Other than that I have had absolutely no problems and nothing to gripe about with them. From the breeds that I have gotten they fit the standard well. They also do an excellent job sexing the chicks. Un related to this topic I just got news that I may have a free Mottled Houdan rooster from my wife. I am so excited.
I DISAGREE ABOUT XTREME GAME BIRDS--- I HAVE DEALT WITH THEM NUMEROUS TIMES AND ALWAYS HAD SUPER SERVICE AND NO DEATHS, AS WELL AS A VERY HIGH QUALITY BIRD! I ALSO SWEAR BY CUMBERLAND GAME BIRD FARM WHICH DEALS IN POULTRY AS WELL AS GAME BIRDS. MT HEALTHY HATCHERY IS ANOTHER GOOD SOURCE.
I just received my second order from Welp and couldn't be happier with their service . Chicks are healthy and lively and their people are just super nice to deal with. They are also very reasonable with their prices with no shipping to figure, it's all in the price listed per chick.
I ordered from Xtreme and now that the birds are over two months old I can tell they are not great quality. Out of the 10 Welsummers I ordered, 2 died. Out of the eight left, 4 are roos and 4 are pullets. One of the roos was a runt and has a deformed foot. Another roo has the wrong color hackles and still a third roo has the wrong color breast feathers. Out of the 4 pullets, two are very friend but smallish, but the largest pullet has the wrong color neck feathers too.
It is a little disappointing since I wanted to breed them.
I have had excellent service from Murray McMurray for more than 10 years now. They are friendly and very helpful, and credit any dead chicks immediately. I also have had great service from Ideal, they are just really, really nice. I think the better quality chicks come from McMurray though, but they also are more expensive. I love McMurray's selection, and it's great for getting an assortment. Not at all happy with the egg color from the feather-legged Cuckoo Marans from Ideal though, they are very light so far.
With the cool spring and the overabundance of folks wanting chickens this year, the Delawares (pullets) I ordered are slow in coming, but the Brahmas (straight run) they got out to me in good time.
