Hawk attack

I got him from Blains farm and fleet their online hatchery. Yea he was very mellow not mean at all very kind to the hens. Let my daughter hold him, we raised him from only a few days old. Yea we might get another one next year but I’m wondering if maybe we should get a bigger breed. Our neighbors have a big rooster and hawks won’t mess with him.
I just ordered Liege Fighters from another member on BYC. The roosters are touted as hawk fighters. They're also supposed to be good around people and get pretty large.

My beautiful rooster Moose was killed today by a large hawk. I am so sad, never thought I would cry over a chicken but I did. He was a lovely sweet boy, died defending the hens. They are all safe thankfully I think he tried to keep them safe. He just started crowing a few weeks ago so he was still young he was our first rooster. We tend to have hawk attacks more in our area during this time of year than any other time. The one part of the netting I had left open so I can easily get inside their run I left open after cleaning their coop, I should have known better. It was a clear blue sky day which we haven’t had in awhile with the heavy snow so the hawks were out hunting. Gotta keep a close eye on the ladies for the next week annd not let them free range especially cause I know the hawk might come back. So sad thou😭
So sorry to read about your rooster. Ironically, I came across your post because I was searching for info on hawk attacks. My little Roo, who looked very much like yours, was killed by a hawk this afternoon. Shockingly I happened right below my dining room window, four feet the house. I had no idea a hawk would come in that close.

It took 2 years for my cockerel to be accepted by my hens, they are 4 yrs old but my younger hens and pullets accepted him the first year. Your rooster was a handsome boy and would have made a gorgeous rooster! I'm sorry for your loss and hope you find another one as sweet and beautiful as him!

Please keep your chickens locked up until the hawk is gone! The less you let your chickens out the better! Predators are competing for food this time of year while food is scarce which increases your chances of having a loss. Sorry for your loss!

I’m so sorry to hear that😭Yea I’ve learned to never underestimate hawks, they don’t seem to be very afraid of humans if they are hunting. The one that attacked our rooster was showing its wings to my husband because we were trying to get it to fly out from under the netting. Here’s a photo I took of it.

Yea they haven't been allowed to free range since the attack which was back in November. We are going to make them a chicken tunnel so they can go out but not get picked off by hawks. Hawks are our biggest predator and problem here, don’t have many ground predators because of the farmer fields by us.
