Lost my rooster to a hawk

We lost our sweet rooster George to a hawk yesterday. He died protecting his flock of 9 hens. I just feel so much guilt that a hawk even got into our run and coop area. And while I know its the circle of life, I'm so sad about the loss and keep thinking I wish I had been home. He was a great rooster, protected the girls from opossums and skunks and never attacked me, he sired three beautiful birds as well. He was only two years old. The girls are now very hesitant to leave their coop, they seem lost without him. We are considering getting another rooster to help protect them. George was a silkie, a big male silkie but a silkie none the less and I do worry about getting a rooster of another breed just because we have a silkie hen and she's much smaller, I wouldn't want her picked on.
Anyways, just lamenting my loss to fellow chicken lovers.

Very sorry you lost him.
You can collect some of the fresh eggs to incubate as they will still be fertilized by him and maybe you will soon have some of his offspring to heal your heart

sorry for your loss man. We have a silkie rooster and a buff brahma rooster and they get along fine and are both very gentle. He did his rooster job and fell on the sword protecting his girls so that was very honorable and noble of him.

Hens will be scared to use a coop or run they know isn't safe after an attack. Covering it with netting may prevent another attack by the hawk if you get a good quality netting and secure it properly.It will be back so keep your birds locked up so it'll move on! Sorry for your loss!
