WeI will soon be a first-time chick owners. We live in So. Calif., and summer heat can reach 95-100 degrees. Our question is: are the following breeds good choices for us :
Black Astrolorpe, Speckled Dominique, Easter Egger, Barred Plymouth Rock, Black and Golden Sexlink, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, and Spangled Russion Orloff.
We want them friendly also.
We welcome comments, cautions, and advice. Thanks.

I think you've picked a great choice of breeds. All are good layers and very friendly. We have Plymouth rocks, a buff orpington, A easter egger egger, a Delaware, And a few other breeds.

Also, Welcome to Byc and good luck with your flock!!

The larger the breed, the less heat tolerant they can be. Buff Orpingtons, while wonderful birds, are maybe not a good choice. It's hard to find a definitive source, but this helps: https://livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/chicken-chart. It is for heritage breeds so doesn't include every breed. I had Orps in Wis. where they did very well. I have Giant Cochins (a bit of an oops) here in Florida, and the rooster is black, poor thing! They are suffering in the heat. I also have barred rocks, and they are naughty as all get-out. I'm forever shoo-ing them out of someplace. If it's off-limits, they'll find their way in! Good luck with your breed hunt, and do check out the pdf chart. It's very helpful.

Definitely no expert:: After researching I'm in Missouri so had to choose heat and cold tolerant. Getting 2 Easter Eggers, a Barred Rock and an Austraulorp. The Aussie being all black is probably the least heat tolerant but from what I've read if they have shade and a breeze they do well. The wind rarely stops here, they will have shade and I am watching for a small kiddie pool for the run.

Breeds with single combs do best in hot climates since the surface area of the comb helps chickens shed excess heat.

But heat is hard on all breeds, regardless. You can help your chickens cope by providing shade and cool damp sand or soil to burrow into. This practice acts as a heat exchange, helping chickens shed excess heat into the damp soil.

Hello, I’m in the research phase of my backyard chicken endeavor. I am located in Southern CA as well. I’m wondering which breeds you ended up getting. I’ve researched easter eggers, black astrolorp and the golden sexlinks for heat tolerance and temperament. Any advice which work well in our climate and with young children? Thanks in advance :)
