Hello bird folks,

Hiya, Harley, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Is a Jaybird a Blue Jay as in the kind we have here in Wisconsin that make a mess of our bird feeders? They are pretty, but I'd love to know how you ever tamed them! The cardinals probably like the mess they make as we've got them and several other birds all eating on the ground under the bird feeders.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Oh that is so interesting you have hand tamed the Blue Jays! What did you use... Peanuts? I have hand tamed Chickadees and Titmice, never Blue Jays, I will need to give them a try too. Nice avatar photo!

I’m Harley, in Sunnyvale, CA creeping up on getting a couple of backyard chickens. City allows 6, I’m going to start with 2.
I have a friend with chickens, and raised birds in my youth. I bought a small coop, working on a run, scheming on wiring off a corner of the yard. (Now that I’ve written that, the die is cast…). I’ve hand tamed several wild jaybirds over the past 35 years.
I know people recommend 3, but I'm going to recommend 4. It goes kinda like with breaks, if you have 5 minutes to spare take 10, and so with chickens if you're thinking of 2 get 4.

Actual reasoning has been given, depending on if they're fully grown or not chicks are fragile, and chickens are generally prey. Otherwise they are flock animals and thrive in numbers.

Good luck!
