Hello community!

Congrats on your retirement and your new house! It's so exciting you are getting chickens, what a great retirement plan! Let us know if we can help with the preparations in any way!

Welcome to BackYard Chickens!
What a nice welcome! How sweet. Thank you so much and I look forward to being a member here for a long, long time!

Hiya, Melissa and Lonnie, and welcome to BYC! :frow

In case you haven't picked what breeds you want, a member wrote this great article about dozens of breeds of backyard chickens. It might help you decide. I'm partial to silkies myself and that's all I raise.
Oh wow! Thank you and I am about to read the article. No, I have not picked the breed(s). I have to be more selective than some people because the house sits on only .6 of an acre. I should probably stick with only 10 hens but would like many more. It is going to be hard but hey, at least I will finally have some hens. Will need ones that don't mind a smaller yard, are more quiet and calm. I want them all to get alone and be healthy and happy. I am going to raise my own meal worms. Retirement will allow for these things that I've wanted but haven't had the time to entertain. Did you know that people are eating meal worms for the 52% protein they provide?! If you can get over the yuck factor, there are recipes that are supposed to be quite good.
Anyway, back to chickens... o
Today, I was looking at Olive Eggers - a non-recognized hybrid and you can get first-generation ones. I want to hatch eggs myself so the chicks think that I am their mother. :love
It may sound crazy but oh well.
This is all so interesting!

My husband and I currently live in Georgia (metro Atlanta area). We have purchased a house in Wildwood FL and when I retire in a year, we will move there full-time.
I have ALWAYS wanted hens and am excited that I will finally get{e them when I retire! In the meantime, I will look at the pics of your girls and read your comments, stories and the articles posted on this site so that when it is time, I hopefully make the best decisions possible for my girls. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your community!

Welcome Melissa. Please learn from us before getting chickens...I wish I had. It would have saved me a lot of time and money. Get hens that are heat hardy, make a safe coop and run that is 10 times bigger than you would do otherwise. By safe, I mean use 1/2 inch hardware cloth everywhere in the coop that has more than a 1/2 inch opening, and for the the walls and ceilings of the run (and with an apron).

Had to ask my mom where in Maine her sister lives.
Anyway, she lived at one time in China, Maine and now lives in Dexter, Maine. I don't have a clue where these are as I haven't yet been to Maine but will one day. :)
I know where China is and I've heard of Dexter. China is almost an hour from me, but that's still close in comparison to some parts of the State.
You should definitely come up here someday! We had a beautiful Autumn season here a week or two ago (most of the leaves are on the ground now).
