Hi, all! My town of Farmers Branch just amended the ordinance prohibiting backyard chickens, and it’s been a nearly lifelong dream of mine to raise chickens. We will be allowed to have no less than 3 and no more than 6 hens, with pretty pro-chicken coop and run requirements (15 sq ft/bird ).

My list of priorities for my future flock is as follows:
1. Doscile - I want friendly pets that my 3 year old can handle
2. Eggs - I want yummy eggs. It doesn’t matter to me how often they lay or what color the shell is. As long as they’re good to eat, I’m good with that.
3. Cute - I prefer to have a breed or mix of breeds that I think look nice.

I’m sure I’ll be spending most of my free time in the coming months browsing feeds and discussions doing research before I make the plunge. Let me know if you have any advice or just want to say hi!

Great for you make sure the son washing his hands real good... allot of us grew up on farms last thing before dinner wash hands but never got sick Welcome to Backyard Chickens please do not let me scare you a few silky birds couple Easter eggers

Welcome to BYC! Great to have you here!

I'm glad your city came to it's senses about chickens. I find the "no less than 3" a little strange, though. So if you have three hens and something happens to one, you're suddenly out of compliance? There's a business opportunity for someone -- selling replacement hens at a premium!

Anyway, you've come to the right place. Lots of information here about breeds and such

G’Day from down under PSLink12 :frow Welcome!

Great news! :clap

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!

Welcome to BYC! It’s grwat to have you join us! :woot I believe all chickens will be docile as long as they are socialized and handles often. If you can buy day old chicks that’s even better. For breeds I say get a brahma, maybe an Easter Egger or two, an Orpington, a welsummer, a Salmon Faverolles, & a leghorn. Good luck with your chicken keeping!
