(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes! I am pretty new. I started 2 months ago by buying a dozen fertile eggs to hatch. I was told I would have a pretty low success rate since I was new. In fact most people I talked with said I should buy 4 month old chickens since I was learning. ( I am a bad listener) I hatched 9/12 eggs and still have 8 of them. They are 6 weeks old now. I purchased a few more from Kahoots and from nearby chicken dealers.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

My husband said I could have a total of 18 but I have 21 (chicken math).

(3) What breeds do you have?
I am not completely sure but I am guessing I have the following breeds: Mystic Onyx, Zombie, Midnight Majesties, White leghorn, Cream Legbar & Buff Orpington mix, Brahmas, Oliver eggers, and some silkie mixes.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
For one, I love animals. I also love the idea of providing food for my family that I know where it came from, Including that I can provide a better life for my chickens and not contribute to the low quality of life many chickens face from egg factories.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I work from home for a workers compensation company, I have 3 piggies, 3 dogs, and 2 cats. I try to garden and then my dogs dig it up and everything dies.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Anytime I search a chicken question there are answers from this website. I love the knowledge and time members spend to answer questions. I am excited to join, learn, and eventually be able to answer questions myself.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Well good for you for showing up those who didn't think you'd do well incubating. That's awesome!

As for the dogs and the garden, the chickens will too. That's one of the few places chicken wire is good for is around gardens. That's what we did. Consider how high your chickens will be able to fly as for how high of a fence you'll need. We have silkies so 3' works fine as they can't fly.

We're glad you're here!
