**HELP** Depue illinois Police came today said I have one week to get rid of chickens!

Thank you everyone! I actually got a lawyer and they gave me some great advice that I think will get me to be able to have my chickens and ducks and even my goat that stays at a friends house until she is in milk.
But I was strongly earged not to say anything to anyone until it is all done so stay tuned! *But a little hint*. Very carefully read through the ammendments...

good luck

I personally believe that every has a right to keep what ever animal within reason they like

I was going to jump on board with Appps because at one time there was no definition of what type animal could serve as a guide animal but now have to agree with Sonoran Silkies. It appears that in 2011 the government layed out new guidelines and stated that only "dogs" qualify and what services they need to perform. http://www.ada.gov/service_animals_2010.htm Anyway, I know this sounds dramatic but is moving to a new home a possibility? Do you have a friend that would be willing to hold onto them until you can sort it out, while maybe appealing it? Unfortunately, some people get a bug up their butt about things that don't affect them in the least. Also, you should check into the topic on the forum about how to get the laws/ordinances changes in your town. I wish you all the best in your endeavors to hold onto them.

Why would an Illinois Police come to the door? Isn't it for the Animal control or city offical to come to the door and let you know of the "illegial" keeping of chickens? Unless they got nothing to do or you might have ignored the previous warnings that warrants the Illinois Police to come.

I wish you all the luck and hope you will keep your Silkies...sure they can be house pets! A diaper for them and you are set to go. Unless you are renting, then it is a problem with LL.

I'm sorry, sandmbaker. Some people can be such jerks!

You might be able to argue your case, but that probably won't get you very far

this is so sad
. what right do they have to tell you you can't keep your pets! my towns the same way... I'm so sorry. can you keep them inside or will they get you for that too? which neighbor turned you in do you know? its sad we live in a world where its illegal to have chickens yet people can have barking dogs. please keep us posted in your case and how it's going. thanks.

We own our home and its fully paid off. The house actually belongs to my mother in law and my husband and doesn't become fully his until she is gone. And until then she holds the deed. So moving is not an option unless a miracle happens and a huge chunk of money pops up.
I tried to explain to my son about not being able to move to a place where we can have the chickens and I told him we need a lot of money to do it. I broke out in tears when he came downstairs with an armful of his favorite toys and said we can sell these mom we can get money for my toys :(

Therapy animals do not necessarily fall under different rules.  ADA has very specific rules on assistance animals, and what does and does not qualify.  Nevertheless, the benefit they provide might well be grounds for granting a variance.

I just read all the rules and regulations on the govt website about ada animals. Its only granted to dogs and mini horses

I would buy a nature CD of sqawking parrots and dogs barking, etc. Buy a sound decimal reader so you do not exceed the allowable noise law for your area. Play it during the allowable time--laws have noise ordinances between certain hours. I would play them outside daily and when an Officer comes to your door, you can truthfully state you do not have any animals and you can show proof that the noise is within legal limits. Explain that since your pets were ordered removed, you now have to supplement your psychological needs.

And if you have spot lights--position them so they glare into your neighbors windows, turn them on randomly at all hours. Again, check your cities code to determine your legal limits. In other words, legally, become the worst neighbor you can possibly be.
