My hens don't like our rooster in the coop with them at night. When he tries to go in with them at night they tend to freak out. They all free range during the day and get along fine. Right now he goes into a separate coop at night. He's not aggressive but is also not cuddly and I've never been able to pick him up. I would like to use the coop he is in for some new chicks but how do I get him into the big coop at night without a disaster? Please be kind, first time chicken mom.

So the coop is a bit tight (unless you have bantams) and may or may not be causing the problem. Have you watched what he does to them at night if you keep him in there?
. When he tries to go in at night the girls get all antsy but he just stands around. I've never just let him stay in there and see if they all eventually settle down.

What do you fear will happen? I'd put him in and lock them up and wait. They'll more than likely settle down once they sort out were he'll be roosting. If they aren't jumping down and full on attacking him you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Chickens talk a lot. When my flock goes in it's a very organized and chatty ordeal. And it takes them a good 45 minutes to get situated and quite. I have 2 roosters and 23 hens.

I think I'll try that, just let them sort it out. I can always go referee if I have too😉

I would suggest looking up integration. Lots of great advice on here. Put him in a separate pen inside your coop and get the hens more use to him being around.
