Hi,
My muscovy left her nest with her babies but one was just starting to hatch. I brought it inside under a heat lamp and kept it moist. It hatched out but it is still attached to the egg membrane by a almost clear thin cord. It also has a bunch of stuff still attached to the navel, which the cord goes into. It did originally have a little yellow but is mostly brown, white and dark red. It doesn't look like the pictures I have seen of unabsorbed yolk or external intestines. Do they usually have left over "after birth" stuff during hatching?

I am worried about it getting infected.

Overall the duck is drying, trying to stand (egg attached is not helping him get around) and seems alert. Possibly a little slow to progress but otherwise really trying to get itself together.

I have sprayed the navel and attached stuff with antiseptic. I am wondering it putting some blue coat around the navel will help?

I have never witness ducks hatch, the mothers usually take care of them fine. I have no idea what is normal and what is not. Other than disinfecting, should I just leave it or try to at least cut the cord attached to the shell?

Please advise... soon!

Thank you

It is alert. I haven't tried to give it any food or water yet. I thought they absorb the egg yoke so they do not eat or drink for the first day or two. I will post a picture.
The cord going to the egg shell has turned dark red/brown now. Seems to be drying up?

Here are some pics... I cut the little cord that was keeping the egg attached. The stuff from the navel does seem to be drying up and getting smaller. I'm only concerned about the color and infection getting into the navel. It has turned mostly black all the way up to the navel. I would be inclined to just leave it and let it fall off as suggested, unless you think it is already infected???

I had the same thing happen with one of my Silkie chicks, the cord and poop-sac just dried off and dropped off after about a day.

And black means the cord is drying up, it should shrivel up and drop off. My silkie chick's cord went from massive and a pinkish-grey, to tiny and black before dropping off.
