I just got four baby chicks (now 2 weeks old) from a feed and grain store; 2 Black Australorps and 2 Buff Orpingtons. They were one week old when I picked them up and only noticed when I got home and looked at them closely that one of the black chick's tail is different than the others. Attached is a picture showing the two tails of the Black Australorp. Does anyone think that the tail on the right could possibly be a roo? The tails of the 2 Buffs and the 1 Black Australorp (on the left) are identical in that they are more fuzzy/fluffy and the one on the right is more together and fuller looking. These are "layers" but I know that it's not always 100% accurate. Thanks for your input.

We got un-sexed checks from our daughters 2nd grade class last year. We kept hoping the difference in tail appearance meant sex as we desperately want to keep one of the white chicks. unfortunately they both turned out to be roos. Hopefully your since they were sold as pullets both go the other way and are hens. I guess I'm saying is don't' worry about it now, I know the waiting is hard.

I know this is an old post, but can you tell me what you ended up with in regards to these two chicks, please

Thanks for asking. She is a girl... and such a sweetie! We love the personalities of the Black Australorps... going to pick up a few more of them as baby chicks in the spring! She is a daily egg layer... only a few days that I can count that she has not laid an egg! Black Australorps are known to be very good layers.

We lost one of the australorp chicks at 15 weeks of age. There were no signs of illness and then one day she came out of the coop in the morning, went down the ladder and fell to the ground and couldn't get up. I tried standing her up but she couldn't support herself. Her legs were both outstretched to one side and not one forward and one back (splits) being consistent with Marek's disease so I don't know what was disabling her.

thanks for getting back to me, i have 2 x 1 week old Black Australorp chicks, with no sign of a tail an very short wing feathers, at the moment, so it will be good to compare to your pic...what sex was the other one, the one on the left of the pic

country chick1, she was a pullet (female) also. I purchased all pullets at the feed and grain store as advertised but mistakes do happen when they are "sexed" at the hatcheries. The tail will come soon... they grow so fast so take pictures at the different stages. Enjoy your australorp chicks!

thanks again..is amazing how fast they grow, out of 6 eggs i brought i got 2 black australorps and 1 light sussex...was meant to be ALL black australorps....but what can you do...so i am really hoping that the 2 i did get are girls...thanks again for your help
