My rooster lost all of his tail feather and one of my Brahmas lost her feathers in a small circle about an inch below her vent. It’s to early for them to be molting any clue what could have caused this? I have a picture of my roosters area but can’t get a good one of my Brahma hers seems a little more red then his. He’s extremely hard to get a hold of even at night but we did manage to check him out and he doesn’t seem to have any mites or anything.

My birds are molting started in the middle of July.

Looks like a combination of molt, & feather picking.

I was an afraid of feather picking. It hasn’t ever happened before so I’m going to have to keep a sharp eye out for the culprit. He looks so ridiculous with out his tail feather. I let them out in the yard yesterday for some roaming and playing time and he looked like he had been chopped in half.

Not sure on the details of why molt happens when. I wonder if daylight hours getting less might contribute. Many of my birds are in full molt even though temps are in the 80s. September has been warmer than August here.

I’m not sure why either. I always just figured they wanted thick fresh feathers for winter. But I could have totally made that up in my head.

It’s been 90-103 here and my birds have been molting for the past two months. I have over 40 right now so it takes awhile for everyone to cycle through their molt. Molting is often triggered by daylight changes not temperature. Mine start to molt every year at the same time I notice the first leaves on the trees starting to turn without fail. This year the trees started to turn earlier than usual and sure enough my birds started to molt earlier as well. My roosters usually always seem to lose their tail feathers first in the molt compared to my hens who usually lose those last.
