In the Brooder

I am so tired. I feel like I check on these chickies none stop. These are our first little babies. Here is my setup. I'm concerned because even though the temperature is always between 85 and 95 (sometimes day and night adjust it) they seem to be away from the light. I know they say that's if it's too hot but I wasn't given specific ages. My two big brown ones are older but are they okay? Am I overthinking. They are happy and all eating and drinking. Does this seem good? Should I adjust anything? I went from 2 kids to 10. They seem to enjoy laying next to each other but near the water. Idk.

Hmm, I know I probably shouldn’t do this, but my brooder was probably more like 80 degrees when I brought my chicks home. They were 3 or so days old. I’d try moving the light up and see if that helps. If they huddle under it, move it back down. Just try and find the right balance. I know I usually just go off of body language when it comes to this.

if they’re moving away from it...too hot. where is your brooder? normally this would be in the garage or outbuilding...if it’s in your house, then the ambient temp is 65-70°...with the light...too hot

It's in my home. But it's in my gym in the basement and it's pretty drafty and cool. So I should make it a little cooler? They won't leave my thermometer alone lol so I'm so paranoid they are messing it up. I just cleaned their bedding. Now they seem to be back over on the other side. Could that have been an issue? Should I check the temp of the room and then adjust their heat? Good lord this is stressful. I'm so scared they won't be happy.

This is how they are sleeping now. Except for hot sauce because he's my spicy trouble maker. I'm trying to wait and watch now that I've cleaned. They have room to move away from the light. I'm gonna see what the temp on the cool side is as well.

I would really just adjust the heat lamp until they look comfortable and are just doing their chick-like things, wandering around in contentment. Try raising it an inch or two, lower it, raise it, or until they are comfy.

don’t stress. my brooders are at outside temp. move the light up...just enough so they come toward it and not away from it
