In the Brooder

2 day old chick has been fine, walking/eating/drinking/pooing but I woke up this morning and it’s like this:

Any advice please?! Is it splay leg even if the legs are out to the front?

It walks still, fairly quickly! It just seems more of a waddle/shuffle now and like it’s dragging its bum? Not all the time though, after I put it back it was standing to walk but not for long, literally a few seconds.

Any help appreciated, thank you.

Hello! It could possibly be a vitamin B, E, or selenium deficiency. If you can find some poultry vitamins containing these, it might help! What kind of feed are they eating?
She could also just be weak. Did you get her from somewhere or hatch her out? Probiotics and electrolytes can help her gain back some strength. Also, what kind of substrate is in the brooder?
Lastly, check and make sure she doesn't have pasty butt. I've heard of it causing similar issues.
How is she doing now?

Hi,

I got her mixed up with one of the others - she’s actually only born last night!

Another hatched this morning, with a similar “bum dragging” issue but this one took a long time to get out once zipped. Seemed… sticky?! But is ok now. This one also had a twisted toe on one foot so I’ve micropored to some cardboard to try and straighten the toe.

Chick no.1 is in the incubator with chick no.2 now to avoid the others standing on them (they’re much smaller) with some food and water. Given some egg yolk off my finger. Haven’t eaten much feed (chick crumb) and there’s no poo in the incubator since they went in at 1pm (now nearly 6pm)

Tried the glass/cup trick with no.1 - she wasn’t impressed. Have got O-Ring hobble(?) thing on her legs now.

I have non-slip shelf liner on the bottom of the incubator which they hatched on, and I’ve got puppy pads on that now. There is also puppy pads in the brooder with the others who are all doing great.

What day of hatch are they on? Sometimes, they get stuck/sticky if the humidity is too low in the incubator.
With both of them having the same walking issues, my guess would be a mild case of spraddle/splayed legs, possibly caused by a deficiency or incubator issues. If you have them, I'd put the hobbles on both of them and supplement them with vitamins. The egg yolk is great for them, too. Molasses water can help make them drink more and give them extra energy.

The other 3 they hatched with are absolutely fine (all from the same batch of eggs) so it’s weird how it’s just these two.

Yes I’ve put hobbles on, and I’ve put some vitamins in their water but neither seem to be eating or drinking so I’m dripping onto their beaks.

I’d say the second one is doing better than the first. First hatched last night, second this morning.
