Hi there,

So my hen unfortunately prolapsed right after this. It is a rectal prolapse not reproductive. I can keep it in despite epsom salt baths, preparation h, etc. she pushes it out right away. At this point I believe she feels more comfortable with it out than pushed back in 😓. It’s been 7 days since her initial prolapse. She is still eating/drinking and appears to be ok. Where should I go from here? I don’t want her to suffer.. should I put her out of her misery or wait longer? I know it will eventually dry out or become infected, which is awful.
Thank you.

I think you can put something on the vent to make it harder so it won’t fall out I’m so sorry I don’t know what you should do poor hen :hit

If the tissues are swollen and expanded, they need to be shrunk somehow. If you have a vet who will see chickens, it can be surgically repaired.

Cortisone cream can help with pain and also shrink the swollen tissues. Above all, it must be kept moist. Manuka honey is good for all of the above. Or you can use sugar as dextrose can shrink swollen tissue.

If none of these measures work and the prolapse persists, drying out, becoming infected, euthanasia is the only measure left to humanely stop the hen's suffering.
